Simranjit Kaur Gill

Legal and Psychological Perspectives of Heinous Crime

Simranjit Kaur Gill, born in Gaunsgarh, Ludhiana, is a prominent advocate and social activist. She completed her schooling in Gaunsgarh before moving to Chandigarh, where she earned her M.A. (Hons) in Political Science and L.L.B. from Punjab University, Chandigarh. Simranjit made history as the first female leader at Punjab University, serving as Girl Wing Incharge of SOPU, General Secretary of NSUI (2011-13), and later as Chief Patron of NSUI in 2014, breaking the patriarchal norms in student politics. She is recognized for empowering female students and advocating for their leadership roles in a male-dominated space.

HHer bold leadership led to significant achievements, such as organizing a hunger strike demanding 24/7 library access for female hostel students. Despite facing physical attacks, she succeeded in her demands. In 2016, she founded a student front that won the PUCSC elections in just 16 days, further solidifying her influence.

Simranjit was later appointed as the youngest Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in 2016 but resigned to focus on activism. She has been actively involved in various organizations and initiatives, including serving as the President of the Women Wing Youth of Punjab and the Regional Coordinator for WTV India.

In 2019, she launched the “ਬਚਪਨ ਬਚਾਉ” (Save Childhood) campaign, raising awareness about child abuse and providing legal aid to victims and families across Punjab.

Despite facing false FIRs and imprisonment for her activism, Simranjit remains committed to fighting injustice. After her release from jail in 2020, she vowed to continue her mission of giving a voice to the unheard and standing against societal wrongs. She currently practices as an advocate in the Punjab & Haryana High Court.
