Sardar Shamsher Singh Ji (Veerji)

Founder & Driving Force Behind
Prabh Aasra

S. Shamsher Singh Ji, affectionately known as Veerji, is the compassionate founder of Prabh Aasra (originally Universal Disabled Caretaker Social Welfare Society), a non-profit established in 2003 alongside his wife, Bibi Rajinder Kaur Ji, to serve the homeless, mentally challenged, physically disabled, orphaned, and destitute in society.

His motivation sprang from witnessing human suffering—particularly the loss of a childhood friend—which stirred his empathy and awakened a mission rooted in Sikh values. Inspired further by Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings and teachings of Gurbani emphasizing universal kinship, he resolved to care for those society had discarded.
Operating initially from just two rented rooms, Prabh Aasra blossomed under his stewardship into a multi-campus institution—now housing nearly 2,000 individuals and reuniting many with their families through initiatives like Mission Milaap.

B Beyond on-ground care, Shamsher Singh Ji was recognized as a para-legal volunteer by the Punjab State Legal Services Authority in 2011, enabling him to establish a legal aid clinic at Prabh Aasra to assist marginalized individuals seeking justice.

Despite immense challenges—including periods when the ashram lacked basic utilities like electricity and water—he continued to appeal to authorities and maintain operations, demonstrating unwavering resilience and commitment.

Under his leadership, Prabh Aasra:

  • Runs medical camps, a 24/7 ambulance, and a body-preserver service aimed at aiding highway accident victims.
  • Installed a cradle at its gate in 2007 to rescue abandoned infants and promote female-child protection—rescuing several babies who were left anonymously.
  • Provides rehabilitation, emotional care, education, legal aid, and vocational training to its inhabitants. Many have regained dignity and independence, while some were reunited with families.
  • Oversees a growing infrastructure including multiple centers across Punjab and a charitable hospital under expansion.

Prabh Aasra and its founders received the “Prominent Punjabi” award in October 2024 for their decades of service, reflecting the social impact they have forged in Punjab and beyond.

In summary, S. Shamsher Singh Ji embodies a life of visualized compassion turned into action—living Sikh teachings by offering saccha asra (true refuge) to society’s most vulnerable. His selfless service, coupled with visionary leadership, continues to rehabilitate, reunite, and uplift thousands. Let me know if you’d like a more personal profile or quotes included next!
